IS THE STORY BELOW TRUE OR FALSE?

A lawyer in Charlotte, NC purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against fire among other things. Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars and without yet having made even his first premium payment on the policy, the lawyer filed a claim with the insurance company.

In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost ';in a series of small fires.'; The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason: that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued....and won! In delivering the ruling the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be ';unacceptable fire,'; and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000.00 to the lawyer for his loss of the rare cigars lost in the ';fires.';

But... After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON! With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000.00 fine.IS THE STORY BELOW TRUE OR FALSE?
In the U.S. it would not surprise me in the slightest if it was in fact true.

I believe to be false myself - but =ly it wouldn't surprise me if it were true, such are the mad laws in the USA.

It is an old lawyer fairy tale. It never happened; not in U.S. Not in Canada, Not in Latin America, Asia, Africa, Middle East or Europe. It is funny though, to a layman. This is why no one can ever provide you with a citation for this fairly tale; except perhaps in the Twilight Zone if you check under ';C'; for cigars!
I truly wouldn't be surprised if it was either, and have little interest in finding out the answer.

I think I have an idea for an episode of L.A. Law, though. Is that show still on? Is Corbin Bernsen still alive?
I have heard this story before. I don't know if it was true or not. But, for once, I am happy for the insurance company. The first lawyer was too cocky and thought he was such an smart xxxxx.
Ha. That's called karma.
I don't know but I hope it is True! Some very clever Lawyer thought the last bit up. Pleased the first lawyer didn't get away with it but maybe 24 months was a bit steep. Like it!
Urban legend - not true
karma always gets you
haha if it is true though..

only in america :P
I hope it's true.....too many sewers (I mean suers) these days that's why we pay so much for insurance.
I hope not ...
Haha that would be funny :)
