How should candidates counter false stories planted about them in the media?

Should they spend time addressing false claims, or just ignore them? How should candidates counter false stories planted about them in the media?
I disagree. You have to answer the claims. If you choose to do a ';no comment'; than the court of public opinion will declare you guilty.

The best tactic is answering them immeadiately while showing your diapproval for your opponents low-ethics smears. Make his smear work against him and work for you. Display yourself as the kind of man who doesn't submit to sleazy tactics. How should candidates counter false stories planted about them in the media?
Ignore them. It really does work. Fighting it seems like your trying to hide. Don't worry, just keep on going with your bad-self.
