What would be the author's purpose in having a false climax in the story?

i am currently reading a book where the main character wins an intergalactic war saving the entire earth but in the end finds inner peace when he is able to forgive himself for killing so many. What would be the author's purpose in having a false climax in the story?
It's a form of misdirection. It makes the absolute final climax, which is usually more significant than the false climax, all the more important and leaves the reader thinking about the more significant point.

The false climax might also be the 'final' climax for a sub-plot in the book.
