False News Story?

Okay, by this point many of you guessed that the thread I had here:

was a false news report. I was curious to see whether or not christians would agree with a behavior shown in the bible if it wasn't in the context of the bible itself. Especially if that example was deplorable.





The story is actually 2 Kings 2 - After Elisha was made fun of by a group of children for being bald, he cursed them in the name of the lord. Two bears then came out of the woods and instead of scaring the children away actually ripped to shreads 42 children.





Elisha praised god for his good works after he finished watching the bears kill all those children.





Never insult a prophet!





What makes some behavior from the old testament acceptable (shunning homosexuals for example) while some (prophets praying for the slaughter of 42 children, and being happy with it) not? If the bible is ALL true, why is it acceptable to pick and choose?False News Story?
The story you mention is one of the most tragic and horrid in the Bible. Not only did Elisha murder those children, but God was a participant by allowing and inspiring the bears to come down and slaughter them (it's not likely that Elisha just called, ';Here, bear bear...'; and they came).





It is not acceptable to pick and choose, but that is what believers invariably do. Most Christians tout the Ten Commandments, even want them posted in government buildings, but find it perfectly acceptable not to honor the Sabbath (Saturday).





Pick and choose. Glad our President doesn't view the Bill of Rights that way - oh wait, he does! (had to get that jab in LOL)





ADDED: Robert R, no matter what kind of rationalization you use, no matter how old those ';children'; were, no matter what they said - there is no justification for murder. If it's okay for God or his ';servants'; to murder people, then that's a religion that I would want no part of.False News Story?

I learned some time ago - NOT to challenge God! He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and allows Mardi-Gra and Homosexual gatherings, demonstrations etc. You could have asked - Why did He (God) kill all the first born in Egypt during the time of Moses. To which I reply - God can do whatever He wants - whether you and I approve or disprove. Until you are ready to challenge God on these type of questions, all you will get is opinions. So here is mine - One part of the Bible I believe is true (I don't pick and choose) Fearing God is the beginning of wisdom. I'd say you got along way to go. But you can start with ---- Jesus died on the cross for your sin. Unless you think you are without sin that is.


I still believe you asked a good question and hope you got the response you desired.
Oh yes God protects His in many ways, there are those who came for me to do harm and have died in the way NOW that does not mean I believe that God did it. Just because Elisha praised God for this act does not mean that God ordained it.

Those were not ';little'; children in the Elisha account, and he did not call them out of he woods, God did.





The original, word is 碌ynfq 碌yr[n nearim ketannim, may mean young men, for fq katon signifies to be young, in opposition to old, and is so translated in various places in our Bible; and r[n naar signifies, not only a child, but ***********a young man*******, a servant, or even a soldier, or one fit to go out to battle; and is so translated in a multitude of places in our common English version. I shall mention but a few, because they are sufficiently decisive: Isaac was called r[n naar when twenty-eight years old, Gen. xxi. 5-12; and Joseph was so called when he was thirty-nine, Gen. xli. 12. Add to these 1 Kings xx. 14: ';And Ahab said, By whom [shall the Assyrians be delivered into my hand?] And he said, Thus saith the Lord, by the YOUNG MEN, yr[nb benaarey, of the princes of the provinces.'; That these were soldiers, probably militia, or a selection from the militia, which served as a bodyguard to Ahab, the event sufficiently declares; and the persons that mocked Elisha were perfectly accountable for their conduct.





What they said was





Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.] jrq hl[ jrq hl[ aleh kereach, aleh kereach. Ascend, thou empty skull, to heaven, as it is pretended thy master did!





They made fun of the prophet (a representation of God on the earth) saying that he was bald, senseless, and had made up the story of his master (the prophet he succeeded) ascending. Making fun of the prophet was the same as making fun of God himself.





They were blaspheming God and making fun of his power. They were young men above the age of accountability and were judged for their blasphemy





And homosexuality is an abominationn to God and condemned before, during, and after the Law of Moses.





1 Cor 6: 9Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,


10Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.


11And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
