Grade school are taught a false story that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and could not lie?

Why do you think schools teach this story even though it is not true?Grade school are taught a false story that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and could not lie?
Alright seriously, dont be an idiot. everyone knows that that is just a story.Grade school are taught a false story that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and could not lie?
America needs heros, and there is no proof one way or another that the story is not true. It is a story written by a man trying to prove a point about not lying, and Abraham Lincoln was not yet a hero at the time; therefore, who better than a war hero and the ';father of our country';? The reason you know the story is not true is that someone would rather hurt a true hero's memory than allow a story that teaches values, morals, and ethics remain a part of growing up.
I think it's becuse grade school students needs to understand history and the best way for them to do so is if they see it as an interesting story (the myth includes elements that are important), so Washington is portrayed as a hero. You wouldn't want an eight year old realizing that Washington was technically a traitor.

Same thing goes for Christopher Columbus, Lincoln, and Revere.

It wasn't until high school that I learned the reality behind the stories. And, it certainly doesn't help that in AP US History, practically every fault of each historical person is given.
Oh come on - all countries - all civilizations have their fun mythology - and cherry trees and George not lying are part of our American myth. It's sort of like telling kids about Santa.

Now if they told you that Georgie Bush didn't lie - THEN you'd have something to worry about.
